Case Study
Building a Scalable Healthcare MSO to Serve Rural Hospitals
September 1, 2026
The Challenge
A hospital management company had acquired the IT and Revenue Cycle operations supporting a group of rural hospitals during a complex healthcare divestiture. Leadership saw an opportunity to transform those capabilities into a standalone managed services organization (MSO) that could serve community hospitals with high-quality, cost-conscious services.
The challenge was significantly larger than launching a new service line. The organization needed to:
- Define where it could compete and differentiate in a crowded MSO market.
- Transform inherited operational teams into a customer-focused professional services organization.
- Build the business infrastructure required to operate independently, including finance, HR, legal, marketing, technology, data and analytics, and operating processes.
- Create a repeatable commercial model for pricing, selling, contracting, onboarding, and delivering services at scale.
Value Delivered
- Market-Ready in Approximately 10 Months: Helped build the foundation of a complex healthcare services company from the ground up and position it to begin selling managed services within approximately 10 months.
- Significant First Client Opportunity: Supported proposal development and contracting for the MSO’s first prospective $30+ million multi-year client.
- Scalable Workforce Platform: Established the operating foundation needed to transition and support approximately 400 employees across IT and Revenue Cycle functions.
- Repeatable Go-to-Market Engine: Equipped the organization with the pricing, contracting, sales, CRM, marketing, and implementation tools required to pursue and onboard future clients consistently.
- Foundation for Long-Term Growth: Created the structure for a scalable professional services organization designed to expand beyond its initial customer base and serve rural and community hospitals over time.
Our Approach
- Market Assessment & Positioning: Conducted a comprehensive market assessment to evaluate competitors, customer segments, service offerings, hospital size, and geographic opportunities. The work identified potential white space and informed how the new MSO could differentiate.
- Operating Model & Service Readiness: Helped define the organizational structure, assess which IT and Revenue Cycle services were ready for market, and establish the processes, business requirements, technology requirements, and vendor strategy needed to scale.
- Commercial Infrastructure: Built the tools required to take the business to market, including pricing and financial models, standard contracts and NDAs, proposal templates, a sales pitch deck, branding and website support, CRM capabilities, and a defined sales motion and client journey.
- Implementation & Growth Planning: Developed a 90-day implementation plan and supporting toolkits for Revenue Cycle clients while helping shape a multi-year growth strategy focused on strategic partnerships, targeted market development, existing-client expansion, and a repeatable sales process.
